CHOOSING A CAREER
Choosing a career that best suits you can be a difficult process. It is important that you explore all avenues available and gather as much information as possible. Wade High organises many activities throughout the year to assist in this process, as outlined in the Wade High School Careers News page of this website. The Careers Room also has an extensive range of resources related to careers and training options.
The best way to research a career is to read widely, talk to people and ask questions. To research a career, begin with the broad industry, familiarise yourself with the occupations in that industry, then focus on specific occupations or jobs within that industry which interest you and which you may like to pursue as a career. For example:
- Decide on the industry e.g. Health
- Find the range of jobs available in the Health Industry
- Identify a specific occupation e.g. Nursing
- Explore this occupation further to see if there are any particular specialisations, e.g.Paediatric Nursing.
The bullet posters in the hallway outside the Careers Room will help you identify occupations within specific subject areas.
You can find information on occupations from a variety of sources:
- The Internet
- Careers advisers
- Career expos/tertiary days
- Training and education providers
- Industries and employers
- Libraries
- Government departments
- Professional associations
- Yellow pages
- Newspapers, magazines, journals

These segments are based on young practitioners with whom students can identify.

TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS
Tertiary Education is generally regarded as any form of further education beyond high school. It includes university, TAFE and Private Providers.
How do I choose which?
Look closely at all your interests and abilities. You may have many. Think broadly and don't limit yourself to just one course or career. Look at several. Consider all the tertiary options available to you and suitable for you. Get as much information as you can about all those options and tertiary study generally. Make realistic choices based on the information and sound advice from people who know what tertiary study is all about. The course qualification has the same value at different institutions, but the institutions are very different in style. When choosing where to go, be careful to consider all of the following: the whole range of institutions offering courses of study in areas that interest you, entry requirements, student fees, HECS, administration charges and other costs eg textbooks, program flexibility - do the courses offer a wide range of subject choice or are they fairly restrictive - availability and cost of accommodation, dates of interest, open days and enrolment procedures.
UNIVERSITIES.
Applying for University.
Use the UAC guide which will be available in August. There is a section at the front of this that explains the application process, read this carefully.
STEP 1: Look through the guide and investigate which courses interest you. Do not just rely on the guide - contact the university and request they send you more information, check out the website for each institution ( see the links below) or go to the Careers Room and ask to see a prospectus for the particular institution you are interested in.
STEP 2: Write out a list of any courses that you are interested in. Note if there are any special requirements e.g. an interview, entrance test or portfolio. Then order them in the preference you would like. Have the course that you would most like to be accepted into as you first preference and then list down to your last preference. Do not forget to have a couple of safety net courses just in case you do not get the UAI that you expect.
STEP 3: Double check that you meet all requirements before putting in your application.
STEP 4: Contact the Uni to arrange interviews/times for tests etc if this is necessary.
STEP 5: If you intend to apply for on campus accommodation, scholarships or special consideration you need to do this at the time you apply to UAC. Some industry scholarships close earlier in the year so ensure you are aware of deadlines.
STEP 6: Contact the UAC/VTAC infolines and enter your application. Do not forget to get your receipt number and write this down in several places as it is very important.
Early Entry.
The following universities offer Principal's Recommendations or Early Entry Programs:
University of New England University of Wollongong Charles Sturt University University of Notre Dame Australian Catholic University University of Canberra
You will need to go to the institution's website and obtain all the information you need. Download an application form, follow instructions carefully and complete the application requirements. Bring the application form and any supporting documents you need to Mrs Bergamin to have it checked. It is a good idea to ring the institution and inform them that you are submitting your application form and ask if there is anything else you need to do. Make sure you give the form to me well in advance of the closing date so that I can complete the school's requirements. Deadlines must be strictly adhered to NO EXCEPTIONS ARE MADE.
ATAR.
In June 2009, the Universities Admission Index (UAI) changed to the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank ( ATAR).
There will be three changes:
1.UAI will be known as ATAR now
2. The highest rank an ATAR is 99.95 as opposed to a UAI of 100
3. ATAR will indicate a student's position in relation to the Year 7 student they began high school with instead of with the Year 10 students.

PRIVATE PROVIDERS
Not all students finishing school will want to go to university and some may not attain the necessary marks. Whatever the reasons, many students choose to attend private training colleges for their tertiary education.
Accreditation
The important thing for all students who may demonstrate an interest in studying with a private provider is to make sure the college or institution has government accreditation.
Private providers should be accredited as a RTOs-Registered Training Organisations. Only Registered Training Organisations can issue qualifications and statements of attainment that are recognised nationally.
Recognition of Qualifications
All States and Territories have agreed to a common protocol regarding the levels and definition of qualifications issued for recognised vocational education and training in Australia. This agreement is formalised by the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), which provides a "nationally consistent yet flexible framework for all qualifications in post-compulsory education and training". For further information visit www.aqf.edu.au
All registered private education providers must have a policy for the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) to ensure that students' existing knowledge and skills are recognised.
ACPET

WORK EXPERIENCE
At Wade High, Work Experience is offered to all Year 10 students in the final week of Term 2. This provides them with a taste of the world of work. Students will learn valuable skills such as communicating with others, following instructions and working with a team. They will be able to try an occupation that may be of interest for a future career and hopefully develop self confidence. This will enable them to make a smoother transition from school to work.
During the program each student will attend a place of work for five days and will be expected to wear appropriate clothing and observe normal business hours of the establishment concerned.
Students should speak with their parents and Careers Adviser about possible placements. They should make contact with an employer and negotiate the placement. They should see their Careers Adviser to obtain a Work Experience Package which includes a copy of:
- Employers Guide to Workplace Learning
- A Student Placement Record
- A Guide to Workplace Learning for Parents and Caregivers
- A Living Away from Home form which students and parents need to complete if the student is travelling out of the district or not living at their normal address during work experience.
The Student Placement Record should be completed by students, parents and employer and returned to school. Copies of this will then be made and distributed to relevant parties.
Students are required to give the Employers guide to Workplace Learning to their employer when they meet with him/her to have the employer section of the Student Placement Record completed. All other forms will be posted to employers by the Careers Adviser.
This week of Work Experience is a compulsory week for all Year 10 students at Wade High School. Students are expected to abide by all the rules and recommendations regarding work placements, given to them in their Careers lessons. Those students intending to work on a building site e.g. builders, plasterers, plumbers, tilers etc need to complete an OH & S Course. This course is organised by your Careers Adviser and Griffith TAFE.

CAREERS NEWS.
Updated 6th November
GOOD LUCK TO ALL OUR YEAR 12 STUDENTS FOR THE HSC EXAMS!!!!
Lots of new items, particularly mail, fill my pigeon-hole daily and the Careers News section of this website is the best way of getting all the information to you.
As the year progresses, I will be receiving correspondence from universities, private providers, employers and training providers. It is important that you read this section so that you make well-informed career decisions and keep up-to-date with the latest news. Click onto the websites listed, they are a great source of further information for you to explore your options. Remember that you can only make well-informed decisions if you read widely and talk to people who have knowledge of the career or course. Send an email to a university, make a phone call to an employer or come and talk to your Careers Adviser.
Throughout the year you will be given a miriad of dates to stick to.....assessment tasks, exam timetables and dates related to job, university and TAFE applications. Mark these in your diary or on a calendar so you do not miss an opportunity! Clever planning is needed in completing application forms, so plan ahead, especially if you have to gather reports and references from others.
I would encourage Year 12 to talk to family and teachers about their options on leaving school. Make a phone call, go to an Open Day or look at websites. It is up to you to go in search of the possibilities – don’t let them slip away. There is a wealth of Career resources available. Year 12s are always welcome to come to the Careers Room and talk to me – I can help explore options and refine applications
Students must apply to UAC by the 30th September but can change their preferences up until the 6th January.
Interstate University Applications. Year 12 students wishing to apply to interstate universities do so online with the local equivalent of UAC:
* South Australia and NT: www.satac.edu.au
* Western Australia: www.tisc.edu.au
* Victoria: www.vtac.edu.au
* Queensland: www.qtac.edu.au
* ACT universities use the UAC application system
CONGRATULATIONS:
* To Alexander Anderson who has gained early entry into Law at the University of Wollongong. He has proved that dedication and hard work does pay !!!
Year 11 students have started their HSC course this term and it is important that they are organised right from the start, Students are reminded to use a homework diary and a planning calendar, have their notes well organised and maintain a regular study routine – at least three hours per subject per week. Most students will have at least one assessment task for each subject this term so they should aim to do their best in each of these. Remember the HSC is half school assessment.
Year 11s have been advised to choose a teacher mentor for their final year of schooling. Mentors can help with organisation and study skills, keep students motivated and on track and offer support and encouragement. Any student who would like a mentor can see me in the Careers Room.
All Year 11s have been interviewed over the past two weeks to discuss their progress, subjects for the HSC and future career plans. Some students are working hard and should be congratulated for their effort in the Preliminary course. However, there are a number of students who need to focus more on schoolwork and get motivated. I would encourage all Year 11s to work towards achieving their goals and remember that the tougher the job, the greater the reward.
Year 10 have a busy term ahead with lots of activities as well as their School Certificate exams. They have been asked to be Peer Support leaders and assist next year’s Year 7 students as they make the transition to high school. Peer Support training is a leadership training course and will take place after the School Certificate exams. I encourage Year 10s to consider completing this course as it equips them with valuable teamwork and leadership skills.
Year 10 will be involved in the Australian Business Week Program in Week 7, 30th November – 4th December. They will be divided into groups which represent companies competing against each other. They will need to make decisions, recognise opportunities, solve problems and take responsibility. ABW helps to prepare students for the workplace and work culture. An information note and brochure has been given to all Year 10s about ABW. The program will cost $45 per student which includes all materials and administrative expenses. Most of this is being paid for by the school and the P & C. I would like to remind Year 10 to pay their $15 contribution to the Front Office by 13th November. All Year 10 students are to be involved and it is important that students attend each day. The highlight of the week is the Trade Display and viewing of TV commercials made by each group. Parents are welcome to view these on Friday 4th December at 12.30.
Some of our Year 10 students have been actively trying to obtain jobs or apprenticeships so that they can leave school once they have their School Certificate. All students have been writing resumes and application letters and learning about interview skills and techniques. Those wishing to obtain jobs or apprenticeships are advised to apply now and not leave it until next year. Sonia Rinaldo, from MEGT, has spoken to all Year 10 classes about school based apprenticeships and traineeships. Congratulations to those students who have already organised school based traineeships for next year. These students will be able to gain a vocational and technical qualification while still at school. Any Year 10 students who has enrolled in a VET course and would like to be considered for a traineeship should see me in the Careers Room for more information.
YEAR 9:
Four of our Year 9 boys participated in the Bricklaying Adopt-A-School project this week. The Australian Brick and Blocklaying Training Foundation partnering with GEBAC, Craig Morriss (trainer/employer) and the Griffith PCYC worked with the boys to construct a brick project at the PCYC. Congratulations to Joel Trenerry, John Maher, Michael Crowe and Ben Watts who displayed excellent skills and behaviour during the week. They all worked very hard even in 40 degree heat! IMPORTANT FACTS.
- A recent study by the Australian Council for Educational Research found that, in general, post-school education and training leads to higher status occupations and higher earnings compared to not doing any further study or training. However, not all forms of post-secondary education and training are equally beneficial. In terms of earnings, a bachelor degree has the largest impact, increasing earnings by about 31% on average. You can download the report from www.acer.edu.au.
- Studies show that young people who complete VET study have better employment outcomes than those who do no post-school study.
- University graduates are more likely than other young people to secure full-time employment and to have higher status jobs and higher earnings.
- "It is now widely recognised that the skills and knowledge that students need for life and work beyond school are much more than proficiency in the traditional 3Rs. As Australia’s economy continues to evolve in response to technological developments and the need to compete in a global market, the nation needs a highly skilled and flexible workforce. Apart from the basic skills of reading, writing and numeracy, a broader range of skills and knowledge is now essential for students to make an effective transition from school to work. This includes knowledge in scientific literacy, ICT literacy, civics and citizenship and employability skills (including planning and organising, teamwork, initiative and enterprise, self-management and learning." (from "Australian Council for Educational Research" issue No.20) All students at Wade High are encouraged to engage in a broad range of school activities and community work in order to improve their employability skills.
- NSW HSC Online celebrated its 11th birthday last year and has become an invaluable resource for teachers and students. The site has material for 48 HSC subjects, along with study tips, past exam papers and markers’ comments and has delivered over 1.7 million web pages so far. Visit www.hsc.csu.edu.au.
